Temporomandibular disorder is a painful condition which affects nearly 35 million American citizens today. The temporomandibular joint, or the hinge joint of your jaw, is actually the most often used joint in the entire human body. The joint consists of a ball and socket, which moves fluidly within one another thanks to a cushion of soft tissue that exists between the two bones. If this pad breaks down over time, either due to injury or incorrect jaw movement, it can cause the system to work incorrectly, causing popping and mild to severe levels of pain, as well locking up altogether. When this joint fails to work properly, it can cause patients to experience problems in everyday life, including issues with breathing, swallowing, and making facial expressions. The most tell-tale symptom of TMD is a clicking or popping sound that occurs every time a patient extends their jaws to open their mouth. TMD can happen due to one problem, though in most cases it is a series of complications which causes TMD to develop or even simply flare up on occasion. Sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and Lyme diseases are just a few of the many disorders which can cause one to experience difficulties and problems with their temporomandibular joint. Your professional TMJ specialist in New York City works to treat this problem as conservatively as possible. Most cases of TMD can be treated through a special mouth guard for proper jaw alignment, but surgical options are available for severe cases if necessary.

Why you need to brush before going to bed!

The question: Just how gross is it really if I forget to brush my teeth before bed every once in a while?

The answer: Bad news: It’s pretty gross. You probably already know that the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing those pearly whites twice a day. You also probably know that brushing your teeth is one of the easiest ways to avoid scaring off your date.

But brushing is important for reasons beyond fresh breath. Skip a session, and you’re on your way to encouraging the growth of bacterial buildup in the form of plaque, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction in New York City

Here at the office of Dr. Elliott Ostro, the top New York City oral surgery expert, one common service that we provide for patients is we can uncover impacted teeth. If a tooth does not erupt from the jaw properly, it can become impacted. A tooth can remain impacted for a number of reasons. In some cases, the teeth are simply overcrowded and there is not enough space for the new tooth to come in properly. In other cases, the jaw is too small to accommodate the tooth. For some patients, the tooth comes in twisted or displaced in some way, making it impossible for the tooth to erupt fully. Many people do not realize they have an impacted tooth until they visit a dental professional, because in many cases impacted teeth are not painful. However, impacted teeth can eventually become painful and cause serious problems. In some cases, an impacted tooth will push on the tooth adjacent to it, causing a misaligned bite.

If you have an impacted tooth that has partially begun to erupt, it can easily trap food debris, plaque, and other similar debris in the tissue surrounding it, which can then cause inflammation in the gums as well as tenderness and pain in the surrounding area. If you think you have an impacted tooth, you should visit New York City oral surgery expert Dr. Ostro so that we can uncover the tooth and decide how to treat it. There are several methods that can be used to uncover the tooth. The method that Dr. Ostro chooses depends on a few different factors, including the location of the impacted tooth, the extent to which it is impacted, and so on. Our New York City oral surgery expert will be happy to discuss how the uncovering process and then the actual treatment process could work for you during your next visit to Dr. Ostro’s office.

TMJ disorder, shorthand for temporomandibular joint disorder, affects the jaws and your ability to open and close them normally. The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects the lower jaw (or mandible) to the temporal bone of your skull. When it is operating properly, you don’t have to think very much about it. Your jaws will move up and down as well as from side to side as they do all the time. However, when it is not functioning normally, you can find it difficult to talk, eat, or even yawn. If you are experiencing TMJ disorder, it is comforting to know that our TMJ oral surgeon, Dr. Elliott Ostro, can help.

So where does TMJ disorder originate? One day your jaws are working perfectly and the next you are having problems. Well, sometimes it is exactly that simple because TMJ can be caused from an injury or accident that results in damage to the joint. In other cases, the culprit is erosion of the disk that allows it to shift and become misaligned. Or arthritis can be the root cause. Symptoms that may indicate a TMJ disorder problem include jaw tenderness, pain while chewing, and difficulties with opening and closing your mouth due to your jaws locking. In addition, pain in or around your ear or general facial pain could be due to TMJ disorder. Any of the listed symptoms is a good reason to call us and schedule an appointment with our TMJ oral surgeon.

Most at risk for TMJ disorder are women between the ages of 20 and 40, but anyone can get it at any age. Mild cases of TMJ disorder may not require any treatment and will just go away on its own. To relieve related discomfort, an over the counter pain reliever is typically recommended. Prescription strength pain relievers may be necessary if the pain is more severe as well as muscle relaxers and sedatives, particularly for helping with teeth clenching at night. Bite guards, physical therapy, exercises, and counseling are among the varied possible remedies for addressing TMJ disorder. In the most extreme instances, injections or surgery may be recommended by our TMJ oral surgeon. But this is usually not necessary.

After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot as it aids healing. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities will dislodge or dissolve the clot and retard the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and experience some swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours. Need to get a tooth removed? Call At Dr. Ostro at 212-223-8311.
