There are many different reasons as to why someone may need oral surgery. Sometimes oral surgery is required in the event of the aftermath of an injury or because decay and disease require more intensive work to resolve an issue. Other times, oral surgery is required in order to help improve the quality of your dental health, whether it be in the present or the future. When it comes to wisdom teeth removal, it can be a bit of everything, but ultimately it is up to your dentist when your wisdom teeth are to be removed. If you are in need of wisdom teeth removal in Manhattan, then Elliott Ostro DMD Gillen can help you get the comprehensive care that really need.

Wisdom teeth are the last of your teeth to develop and emerge from your gums. Wisdom teeth are typically called wisdom teeth because they tend to develop when you are already an adult, typically between the ages of 18 and 21 though some people may get their wisdom teeth earlier or later than those average ages as well. Part of the importance of routine dental exams and checkups is to keep tabs on your overall dental development. With the help of X-rays, dentists can monitor the way in which your teeth are developing and can tell whether there may be any future issues. Many people develop impacted wisdom teeth, which means that they do not come in straight. Mostly, impacted wisdom teeth grow towards the rest of your teeth instead of straight up which can cause a great deal of issues. This can cause dental crowding and immense dental pain as well. Impacted wisdom teeth should likely be removed before they emerge from the gums and before they begin to cause damage. Here with Elliott Ostro DMD, wisdom teeth removal in Manhattan can help to prevent these problems before they occur. Some people have wisdom teeth that are not impacted and may not need to have them removed, but they can be difficult to clean and may be prone to decay. Since wisdom teeth are not entirely necessary, they can be removed to help prevent tooth decay in the future as well.

If you are in need of any wisdom teeth removal in Manhattan, Elliott Ostro DMD can help. If you think that your wisdom teeth are coming in or if you are I the market for a dentist that can perform this procedure for you, then simply call us here at our offices and schedule an appointment with us today.

Our patients receive the best oral medical care available, whether we are performing a simple tooth extraction or an advanced oral surgical procedure.

Tooth extractions in NYC, by Elliot Ostro DMD, can be performed for many reasons. Of course, the first and best option is to try and save the tooth. However, there are times when root canal therapy, fillings or crowns are not sufficient to save a tooth; then it must be extracted. Other reasons a patient may need to have a tooth extracted include: teeth need to be removed to make room for orthodontia; a tooth cannot erupt due to crowding; a tooth is too badly damaged from trauma; a tooth is too badly decayed to be restored; to prevent the spread of a serious infection; or if the patient’s immune system is compromised. Today, using modern anesthetics and sedatives, pulling a tooth can be done with little or no discomfort to the patient.

Tooth extractions in NYC, by Elliot Ostro DMD, are generally performed using local anesthesia. However if more than one tooth is being pulled, or if a tooth is impacted, a general anesthetic may be used. This way you can comfortably sleep during the procedure, and be assured that you will not suffer any discomfort. When a tooth is impacted, the doctor will need to cut away gum and bone tissue that surround the tooth, and then loosen it with forceps. If a tooth is unusually difficult to remove, it may be removed in pieces. After the tooth has been removed, the surgeon will pack a gauze pad into the socket; you will need to bite down to help stop the bleeding. On occasion, the surgeon will use a few self-dissolving stitches to close the gum over the area of the missing tooth. Tooth extraction is generally an easy procedure to tolerate. If you are in need of a tooth extraction, make an appointment today to see Dr. Ostro.

An unerupted tooth is a tooth that has formed but has yet to emerge into your mouth. Teeth that fail to erupt can damage your surrounding teeth, gums, and supporting bone. The unerupted teeth can also lead to the formation of tumors and cysts that will severely disrupt your jaw. It is because of all these risks that our dental surgeon, Dr. Elliott Ostro, finds it necessary to extract any unerupted teeth. Most unerupted teeth are among third molars, better known as your wisdom teeth. Third molars are the last of your teeth to develop so by the time they are ready to erupt, there is often no room for them in the jaw line. When this is the case, these third molars remain beneath the gums and become potential problems for you and your dental health. Your cuspids, the four pointy teeth surrounding your front teeth, and bicuspids, the teeth between your cuspids and molars, are also known to become impacted and should be extracted by our dental surgeon.

As our local dental surgeon, Dr. Elliott Ostro will explain, your unerupted teeth can eventually cause symptoms such as, pain, swelling, and infection in your surrounding tissues. X-rays will detect the presence of any unerupted teeth and should be extracted before any painful symptoms begin. While our dental surgeon can treat partial impacts under local anesthesia, deeper impacts will often require a patient to be put to sleep under general anesthesia. When orthodontic treatment is needed, unerupted teeth are often extracted during the treatment to eliminate the risk of the tooth finally erupting and then disrupting the alignment of your newly straightened teeth.

In some situations tooth extractions may need to be temporarily postponed by dental surgeon, Dr. Elliott Ostro. For instance, if an infection has progressed from the tooth into your bone, it may decrease the potency of anesthesia and will be treated with antibiotics before the unerupted tooth can be extracted. Before an extraction our dental surgeon will take your medical and dental history to be sure that you are ready and able to have the procedure.

Dr Elliott Ostro – NYC Oral Surgeon

One of the most common issues that our number one NYC oral surgeon, Dr. Elliott Ostro, treats in his patients is the impacted wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that typically start to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25 years old for most patients. Wisdom teeth almost always need to be removed, even if they do not seem to be causing you trouble. The main reason that wisdom teeth need to be removed is if they become impacted. A tooth is impacted if there is not enough space for it to come through, and if the gums or another tooth are inhibiting it from erupting properly. Impacted teeth are serious problem because they can lead to infection, tooth crowding, damage to surrounding teeth, damage to tooth roots, and more. Impacted teeth can also lead to the formation of cysts that can make the tooth harder to remove later on.

It is best to see our NYC oral surgeon early on for wisdom tooth removal, because as the teeth grow, their roots become longer and make the teeth harder to remove for Dr. Elliott Ostro. The teeth can also cause symptoms to be more painful if they are left in for a longer amount of time. Even if the teeth are not particularly bothering you, you should visit our NYC oral surgeon if you are in the age range of wisdom tooth eruption so that Dr. Elliott Ostro can examine their development and see if surgery is necessary. Before surgery, our NYC oral surgeon will discuss the process with you and let you know what to expect, making sure that you are comfortable and feel good about the procedure to come.

If you are interest in learning more about impacted wisdom teeth or other common issues that our NYC oral surgeon treats, we invite you to visit Dr. Elliott Ostro’s informative website for some additional information about oral health topics and procedures. After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot as it aids healing. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities will dislodge or dissolve the clot and retard the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and experience some swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours. Need to get a tooth removed? Call At Dr. Ostro at 212-223-8311.

Many people wonder who they need to see to have their wisdom teeth removed. Are they required to go to an Oral Surgeon for the extraction or can their regular dentist perform the procedure safely? In general, the job of removing a person’s wisdom teeth falls under the job description of an Oral Surgeon and your Central Park South Dental Surgeon, Elliot Ostro, DMD is a board certified Oral Surgeon and dedicated to delivering the most comfortable and successful results. Dr. Ostro and his friendly, knowledgeable staff are committed to understanding, meeting and exceeding patient’s expectations regarding wisdom teeth removal, using state-of-the-art technologies that are both pain and anxiety-free.

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that is prevented from erupting into the mouth normally and these impacted teeth can lead to tooth infection, cyst formation, tooth abscess, or damage to adjacent teeth. The removal of impacted teeth requires an incision of the overlying tissue, and often the removal of some bone to be able to extract the tooth. The tooth may have to be sectioned and your Central Park South Dental Surgeon will encourage you to take the operation seriously and plan for a couple of days rest to promote proper healing. You can expect the area around the surgery to swell, and there will be some soreness, so you will probably need to take pain medications for about two to five days, depending on the extent of the surgery and your body’s response to it. Plan on a diet of soft foods for up to a week. Dr. Ostro will take the time to discuss your treatment plan and answer all of your questions to provide you with the professional care you deserve. He will instruct you on how to cleanse the area of the surgery, how to control abnormal bleeding, and other aspects of post-operative care.

Not pleasant but, unfortunately, a common healing complication of wisdom tooth removal is dry socket. This ordinarily occurs in about 10 to 15% of patients, and is much more prevalent in the lower jaw. With dry socket, healing progresses normally for about three days, then there is a dramatic increase in pain coming from the socket and radiating to the ear. If this happens to you, call your Central Park South oral surgeon right away for proper treatment. There is a dressing that will ease the pain, and you may need additional prescriptions.

In general, earlier removal of wisdom teeth results in a less complicated healing process and your Central Park South Dental Surgeon recommends regular comprehensive exams for early detection and to prevent gum disease.

Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed with NYC Oral Surgeon Dr. Elliott Ostro

Wisdom teeth are technically known as 3rd molars.  Third molars usually begin forming around 8-10 years of age.  Most people will develop 4 third molars, however, some people may develop less. Wisdom teeth, if present, may not erupt into the mouth.  When they do not erupt they are considered impacted.  Wisdom teeth which are not impacted typically erupt between 17-21 years old. Often the process of tooth eruption is painful and has associated complications, therefore, we recommend a consultation with your Midtown Manhattan oral surgeon Dr. Elliott Ostro at 15-17 years old prior to eruption.  A consultation at this age is important as most will not have adequate space in their jaw for eruption of their wisdom teeth.

Are wisdom teeth required for normal chewing function?  No, in fact if a person does have adequate space for the eruption of wisdom teeth these teeth only provide very limited chewing function.  Furthermore, wisdom teeth often have short roots and can not adequately support bridges or partials. Wisdom teeth are considered vestigial organs, considered to be an imperfectly formed organ that has little to no utility.

Though most people do not experience pain with their wisdom teeth, that does not mean complications won’t arise. Most problems with wisdom teeth progress slowly and by the time a problem does become evident, damage may have already occurred. Below are some listed problems and concerns about your wisdom teeth, some of which are more common than others. Remember, each person is different, therefore your individual situation can only be determined through a thorough oral examination and evaluation with Midtown Manhattan oral surgeon Dr. Elliott Ostro.

Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Surgically Removed?

Pain – Of the problems wisdom teeth cause, the most common complaint associated with impacted wisdom teeth is pain.  A person may have soreness or pain in the back part of the jaw, ear ache, sore throat or pain in the side of the face.  The impacted wisdom tooth itself may be the source of the pain or there may be an associated infection.

Impacted – It often happens that there is not enough space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to erupt. In such cases they may try to erupt in an abnormal direction, or may be locked into the jaw. This is known as an impaction.  Impacted teeth remain buried in soft tissue or bone.  Impactions may occur in the upper/lower jaw or both.  See below for Types Of Impactions.

Decay – The same types of bacteria that are responsible for infections can also cause tooth decay or cavities in the impacted wisdom tooth and/or the root of the adjacent tooth. A wisdom tooth may decay unnoticed, as they are the most difficult teeth to keep clean, being so far back into the mouth.

Crowding – Impacted or erupting wisdom teeth can push on adjacent teeth causing movement (particulary front teeth).  Current information shows that wisdom teeth do not alone cause teeth to become crowded and crooked, but they certainly can exacerbate existing crowding. Constant pressure from the impacted wisdom tooth can also lead to destruction of the tooth next to it, this occurs because impacted wisdom teeth are often malpositioned.  If they adjacent tooth has decay of the root system it can not be saved.

Interfere With Bite – If wisdom teeth erupt into the mouth, their position frequently interferes with the harmonious movement of teeth.  Over decades this destructive impact affects the wisdom tooth itself, but more importantly it puts stress and strain on the jaw joints and muscles of the jaw.  This bite discrepancy can lead to headaches, muscle spasms and jaw joint problems.

What Happens During a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

The relative ease at which your local oral surgeon in Midtown Manhattan can extract your wisdom teeth depends on the position of the impacted teeth. A pre-extraction examination at our dental offices on Central Park South will give us a better idea of what you should expect during extraction. A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted through the gum can be extracted as easily as any other tooth. However, a wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums and embedded in the jawbone, requires an incision into the gums and then removal of the portion of bone that lies over the tooth. Oftentimes, the tooth will be extracted in small sections rather than removed in one piece to minimize the amount of bone that needs to be removed to get the tooth out.

If you are experiencing any gum pain or crowding in your mouth, we invite you to visit our Midtown Manhattan oral surgery offices for a consultation to see if wisdom teeth extraction is your next step. Call us at (646) 862-7077.
