When people think of oral issues, they may often think of conditions such as cavities and gingivitis. While this is true and these conditions are definitely things that should be prevented or treated, there is more at stake when it comes to your oral health. While some aches and pains in the mouth may be attributed to the presence of tooth decay or gum disease, there are other causes as well. Our New York City maxillofacial surgeon, Elliott Ostro DMD, can provide you with the comprehensive exam necessary to identify any issues you may be experiencing, even TMJ disorder.

TMJ is also known as the temporomandibular joint and may be the cause of pain in the jaw, neck, or general facial region. As the name suggests, this disorder is directly linked to the joint that connects your jawbone to the rest of your skull. This joint is cushioned by a disc composed of cartilage which is supposed to absorb the shock of the bone moving within the joint socket. TMJ disorder falls into two categories. One is where the issue is due to a problem with the muscles that dictate the movement of the jawbone. The other is a problem with the joint itself, such as a displaced disc that causes friction when the jaw is moved. It is common to experience chronic pain, such as headaches, from a tooth or gum infection, but those are not the only causes of discomfort. You may have TMJ disorders if you have any radiating pain in the aforementioned areas (face, jaw or neck), jaw muscle stiffness, limited movement of or locking of the jaw, any painful clicking or popping when you open and close your mouth (originating from the joint of your jawbone), or any changes in the alignment of your upper and lower teeth. Our New York City maxillofacial surgeon, Elliott Ostro DMD, is here to help diagnose any symptoms you may be experiencing and to discover its cause.

TMJ disorders can be tricky, but our New York City maxillofacial surgeon is here to help. If you have experienced any of the above symptoms, then schedule an appointment with Elliott Ostro DMD today.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction in New York City

Here at the office of Dr. Elliott Ostro, the top New York City oral surgery expert, one common service that we provide for patients is we can uncover impacted teeth. If a tooth does not erupt from the jaw properly, it can become impacted. A tooth can remain impacted for a number of reasons. In some cases, the teeth are simply overcrowded and there is not enough space for the new tooth to come in properly. In other cases, the jaw is too small to accommodate the tooth. For some patients, the tooth comes in twisted or displaced in some way, making it impossible for the tooth to erupt fully. Many people do not realize they have an impacted tooth until they visit a dental professional, because in many cases impacted teeth are not painful. However, impacted teeth can eventually become painful and cause serious problems. In some cases, an impacted tooth will push on the tooth adjacent to it, causing a misaligned bite.

If you have an impacted tooth that has partially begun to erupt, it can easily trap food debris, plaque, and other similar debris in the tissue surrounding it, which can then cause inflammation in the gums as well as tenderness and pain in the surrounding area. If you think you have an impacted tooth, you should visit New York City oral surgery expert Dr. Ostro so that we can uncover the tooth and decide how to treat it. There are several methods that can be used to uncover the tooth. The method that Dr. Ostro chooses depends on a few different factors, including the location of the impacted tooth, the extent to which it is impacted, and so on. Our New York City oral surgery expert will be happy to discuss how the uncovering process and then the actual treatment process could work for you during your next visit to Dr. Ostro’s office.

If you would like to learn more about uncovering impacted teeth or any of the other many services provided by our New York City oral surgery specialist, we encourage you to visit Dr. Ostro’s main website, where you can find additional information on these topics and more. If you have any questions or concerns that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact our staff either by phone or online for assistance.

Have you experienced tooth loss? If you are missing a tooth, or several teeth, you understand how it can lead to embarrassment, withdrawing from social and professional interaction, and difficulty speaking and eating regularly. Dental implant surgery, performed by New York City oral surgeon, Dr. Elliot Ostro, may be the perfect solution for your tooth loss. Dental implants are small titanium posts that are inserted into the jaw where teeth are missing. The implants themselves act as a replacement for the root of the missing tooth, and serve as a foundation for a crown, bridge, denture, or final restoration to be attached.

The entire dental implant process usually takes about five separate appointments with Dr. Ostro. The first appointment would consist of a consultation with our New York City oral surgeon, X-rays and radiographs will be taken, and Dr. Ostro will determine if the area where the implant will go is in good enough condition for the surgery to be successful. The second appointment is when the actual implant will be inserted into the jaw. At that point, it will need to integrate with the bone and heal before a replacement tooth is attached to the metal fixture. It can take anywhere from 3-6 months for the complete restoration to be finished. During your third appointment, Dr. Ostro will take an impression of your mouth so your future crown or bridge can be customized and created for you. At the fourth appointment, you will test out the crown or bridge in order to ensure that it fits properly. It will then be permanently implanted into your mouth. The fifth and final appointment with our New York City oral surgeon is when the implant-supported denture is delivered, and is adjusted according to your comfort and needs.

Dr. Ostro, the premier New York City oral surgeon, and his team of friendly, talented staff members are here to make sure that your entire dental implant surgery process goes smoothly from start to finish.
